Abstract

This book examines the Irish experience of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic through a detailed study of the disease in the most industrialised region of the country, the province of Ulster. By exploring the different themes of dispersion of the disease; mortality; gender; medical response and politics - and through case studies of different towns in the province of Ulster - it builds up a picture of the social, economic and political impact of influenza in Ireland. The Ulster experience of the pandemic is examined by constructing micro-histories of industrial cities and towns, along with provincial market towns and a naval port, to provide a basis for comparison of the differing approaches taken to combat the influenza outbreaks throughout Ulster. Contemporary opinion was that Ireland was considerably less affected by the war than the rest of the UK but, this book shows that the war did have a significant influence on how the influenza pandemic impacted on the Irish population from an economic, social and medical point of view. The book also explores the immediate aftermath of the pandemic and how it influenced the Irish response to the influenza scare of 1920 and the viral pandemic of Encephalitis Lethargica which was prevalent for ten years after 1918, as well as discussing what if any lessons learnt from 1918 have been applied to the present-day outbreak of Covid 19. This book will be of interest to academics in economic history, social history, Irish history and pandemic history, and those studying the effects of pandemics on the economy, health provision and pandemic preparedness. Patricia Marsh began researching the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic in 2005 and completed a MA dissertation on the effect of the pandemic in Belfast in 2006. Her PhD thesis completed in 2010 was entitled 'The Effect of the 1918-19 Influenza Pandemic on Ulster.' She has spoken widely on the 1918-19 influenza pandemic at conferences and seminars in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Her research interests include the encephalitis lethargica epidemic in Ireland and typhoid in Belfast during the twentieth century. She worked as a Teaching assistant at Queen's University Belfast from 2008 until 2011 and was a Tutor for an Open Learning Course in Queen's University Belfast, entitled 'Plague, Famine and Disease in Ulster.

Abstract

Nineteenth-Century British Secularism offers a new paradigm for understanding secularization in the nineteenth century. It addresses the crisis in the secularization thesis by foregrounding a nineteenth-century development called 'Secularism' – the particular movement and creed founded by George Jacob Holyoake from 1851 to 1852. Nineteenth-Century British Secularism rethinks and reevaluates the significance of Holyoake's Secularism, regarding it as a historic moment of modernity and granting it centrality as both a herald and exemplar for a new understanding of modern secularity. In addition to Secularism proper, the book treats several other moments of secular emergence in the nineteenth century, including Thomas Carlyle's 'natural supernaturalism', Richard Carlile's anti-theist science advocacy, Charles Lyell's uniformity principle in geology, Francis Newman's naturalized religion or 'primitive Christianity', and George Eliot's secularism and post-secularism.

Abstract

This book is the first of its kind to investigate the ongoing significance of industrial craft in deindustrialising places such as Australia. Providing an alternative to the nostalgic trope of the redundant factory 'craftsman', this book introduces the intriguing and little-known trade of engineering patternmaking, where objects are brought to life through the handmade 'originals' required for mass production. Drawing on oral histories collected by the author, this book highlights the experiences of industrial craftspeople in Australian manufacturing, as they navigate precarious employment, retraining, gendered career pathways, creative expression and technological change. The book argues that digital fabrication technologies may modify or transform industrial craft, but should not obliterate it. Industrial craft is about more than the rudimentary production of everyday objects: it is about human creativity, material knowledge and meaningful work, and it will be key to human survival in the troubled times ahead. Jesse Adams Stein is an interdisciplinary design researcher and oral historian. She is a Senior Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow at the School of Design, University of Technology Sydney, Australia.

Abstract

Right up to the war, Europe's power elites were driven: motivated by chauvinistic demands, a spirit of aggression and hopes for a quick victory. Although this study clearly identifies the tendencies that led to disaster, it refrains from turning the investigation of the causes into a court case. Thus the traumatizing events themselves are the focus of attention - with their scenes and developments. From trench warfare, the stalemate of defensive fire, to the birth of a new war of movement - from the bankruptcy of war to its revival. And it also looks at the consequences of the carnage: First, the effects on the human soul, as revealed in war neuroses and literary testimonies. On the other hand, the political consequences from which humanity suffers to this day. The content In lieu of an introduction: the self-fulfilling prophecy - Before the war: powers and machinations - Major theaters: An overview - Technology, tactics, the war picture: victory of the defensive - Perspective: ways to save the war - Material battle: effect on soul and spirit - Aftermath: Reshaping the World The target groups - historians - political scientists - armed forces personnel The author PD Dr. Lutz Unterseher, sociologist and political scientist, has worked in empirical social research and in an international context as a consultant on defence issues. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Abstract

This book examines the rise of two contrasting variants of Hindu nationalism-the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) divisive cultural nationalism and the softer, less threatening variant of Hindutva espoused by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC). Historically, the overlaps between Hinduism and Islam bolstered the narrative that the Muslims were culturally inferior to the Hindus and that Hinduism was India's unifying tradition. As a result, for many Hindus, emphasizing the distinctiveness of a minority group, especially the Muslims, represents a threat to Hindu superiority and India's cultural integrity. With the rise of the BJP, AAP, and TMC, we witness a tussle between two strains of Hindu nativism. The BJP attempts to attract the Hindu vote by heightening the differences between Hindus and Muslims and portraying itself as the restorer of national integrity. The AAP and TMC revive a much older form of cultural nativism by downplaying the separateness of the Muslims, indicating that India is already a Hindu nation and that there is no need to persecute religious minorities. Comparing the two variants of cultural nationalism provides valuable insights into how culture matters in Indian politics.
